Abstract


Competency mapping of late has become a buzzword in the industry and corporate world synonymous with professional management especially in the field of Human Resources. Competence- the capability of an employee to perform a job is a set of defined skills that affords a methodical approach for identification, appraisal and development of the behaviors in the individual employees. Competencies can be motives, self-belief, attitudes, values, characteristics, cognitive skills or any personal attribute that can be measured prudently to differentiate between superior and average performers.

Competency mapping is a strategic HRM framework for monitoring the performance and development of human resource in organizations. If an organization has to sustain, grow and prosper, it is imperative to align the competencies of its employees‘ with organization‘s goals, mission and vision. Competent employees are assets for any organization, which appreciates with usage and passage of time, and thus it is necessary to design a system to identify, evaluate, retain and reward competent employees. The competencies and quality of employees can spell success or disaster for an organization and in fact many organizations have failed not due to lack of money, material or machinery but due to incompetent/inefficient manpower. Therefore developing a model for competency mapping is of utmost importance.

This paper examines the nature, needs, design, methods and significance of competency mapping as an innovative tool of HRM. The researcher has tried to elicit certain information through personal interaction with some HRM heads of Public and Private sector companies; but mostly relied on secondary data available in plentiful.
